The petition is to support a proposal to the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. to host and display artwork created by animals in a unique “animal artist appreciation” exhibition and fundraiser.  We hope that artwork from many animals will accompany Penny's.  If the exhibition occurs, monetary proceeds from the exhibition will be donated to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

Why have an exhibition of artwork created by animals in the National Gallery of Art?
The true nature of art, as we conceive of it, is an exercise in freedom of expression that moves the imagination of the beholder.  A question emerges regarding the ownership of this realm of creativity and exploration.  Does art belong only to human beings?

We share the world with many different animal species.  Research has demonstrated that animals have emotions and we are gaining knowledge about the ways animals express them.  Studies about the relationships between animals and humans  reveal that we connect to each other both emotionally and physiologically.  Given this evidence, it may be considered plausible that some animals display artistic talent.  They, like human artists, have unique, individual skills and creativity and find pleasure in the creative process and the end result.  Such animals may be trained and may be imitating humans at first, but they appear to experience reward in the work itself.  Other animals may create art when their instinctual traits, behaviors, and habits are expressed through an environmentally available medium.  In this instance, the animal  happens to express its regular behavior in a way that evokes our human artistic appreciation.  In essence the combination of animal action and human imagination generates the artistic result.  In both instances, art and nature and animals and humans are interlaced.  We propose an exhibition to respect animals' capacity for artistic expression.  Animals play...They feel... They create.  When we behold, appreciate, and explore the artwork of animals, we honor the worth of different species and find new pathways for communication.  We expand the dimensions of our understanding of life and nature.  The artwork of animals helps us stretch the status quo in ourselves, enhancing our senses of empathy and compassion to help us create and share a better world.

The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. is an excellent venue for the exhibition.  The Gallery provides a context of historical relevance and creative spirit and imagination.  The Gallery attracts exhibitions from all over the United States and the world.  What better way to honor and explore the new-found perspective within the artwork of animals.  Also, the National Gallery has the ability to debut and host a multi-dimensional educational and artistic event, with the potential to garner worldwide recognition and support.  It is hoped that such exposure will result in increased monetary proceeds and donations for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
